I haven't been following this story closely, but . . .:
  • In response to questions regarding the Cindy Sheehan/Crawford Texas issue: Sheehan Family Statement:

The Sheehan Family lost our beloved Casey in the Iraq War and we have been silently, respectfully grieving. We do not agree with the political motivations and publicity tactics of Cindy Sheehan. She now appears to be promoting her own personal agenda and notoriety at the the expense of her son's good name and reputation. The rest of the Sheehan Family supports the troops, our country, and our President, silently, with prayer and respect.

    Sincerely,

Now it is car and health insurace, registration and a license. It is still better than cleaning the sewer system.
Government entities seem to have a difficult enough time performing their primary tasks. What you are proposing is a bureaucratic nightmare.

It is not that much of a nightmare. Most of it is forcing people to get private insurance. That will actually cut down on the amount of people that government is responsible for reducing the amount of burearcracy.

    Sincerely,
Since you raised the issue, Mr. Club, tell me, do you think this promotes their personal agenda? Is this politically motivated? And do you give more weight to a statement from Casey's aunt or mother?

I'm giving you an "incomplete" for now; please have your finished work to me by homeroom tomorrow.

What about all those kids who become wards of the state?

That was more of a joke. The Christian Scientist stuff is a side issue. Not as important as the plan.

Can she get hubby's reinstated or can she get her's started. I know you have to "read the plan" but is there any real chance?
If she missed the window, she missed the window, and rules like that are enforced strictly in my experience (because if you make an exception for one person, you really may have to make an exception for everyone, and then the rule ceases to exist). Possibly her employer's plan would allow people to come in later, but generally you have a one-time chance to elect into retiree medical at retirement, and if you don't do it then, you can never do it.

But, you need to read the plan and/or talk to the administrators and find out what her options are.

Let us review.

From my understanding the biggest drain on county governments is the overuse of the emergency room (actually the biggest drain is the last month of old peoples lives - but there is nothing we can do about that). All the uninsured people go there for any problems they have. Another problem with all these people without health insurance is that they leave problems until they become acute. For a middle class person this means that the big problem not treated in the end wipes them out, they become penniless and the government has to step in and cover the bill. If they had insurance a privated company would have had to cover the bill.
Until 1986, ERs were notorious for doing so-called "wallet biopsies" before taking patients. If it didn't look like a patient could / would pay, the hospitals would chuck the patients out and send them over to whatever public hospital was around. They'd do this with indigent women in active labor, as well. An irritated Congress passed EMTALA in 1986 and as a result, if you show up at a facility with emergency services, they're stuck with you until you're stable enough to transfer to another facility.

Rational people should have health insurance anyway - instead of buying a new Washing Machine - so we are just geting people to act rationally. So we are helping the marketplace conform more to Mr. Smiths Model.
Health insurance, as any good automaker will tell you, ain't exactly cheap. And it's even more expensive if you're an individual. And HIPAA aside, pre-existing conditions are a bitch. I've been trying for years to put together some sort of program to help artists purchase health insurance. It's not an easy proposition.

Quote:
If every one that has to drive has to buy health insurance then all these people are covered by private companys and they ain't the governments problem. For the people that can't afford health insurance the government pays for a private plan. So if something bad happens it still ain't the governments problem. People that make under $100,000 a year, and don't drive, again the government pays for their private health plan.
Again with the cost. Additionally, a shitload of people in this country have to drive in order to work. On the other hand, there are a lot of places where no one drives.

Quote:
It will also be required under every health plan that you get a biannual check up. That way problems can be detected early before they become catastrophic and everyone can get a good tongue lashing from the doctor every two years. People would have to look at pictures of diseased lungs and stuff that Ty would never allow on this board.
There was a piece on NPR this morning about the debates on how effective some screening methods are. Depends on the person, the person's family history, the person's health history, etc. I don't need a pap smear every year, because I've had three in a row that are normal.

Good question. I'd rather talk CAFTA, though.
