Holy fuck. Maude, we're not in Kansas anymore.

This is why I consider it important to taste at places that are not destination wineries. It's fucking commerce --- they exist to sell you a product --- and the "classy" ones think they can treat you like you're somehow privileged to be there.

Wait a second. You're a doctor and a lawyer? And it's in your screen name? And you resurface to make a snarky wine country comment? Oh SLAM, you got me! You are the Best! I like your Porsche too (hi NFH). Too bad about the penis though.

Didn't someone somewhere already determine that md meant maryland, not medical doctor?

Besides, why would an actual doctor care about teasing Boalties?

Because he didn't get in? And goddammit, he's going to make them pay for that. He's my new hero. Sorry Hank, you've been replaced.

Ah yes, the bitter and jealous MD. I've seen that behavior before. From 4th tier law students.

look, all i'm saying is that public law school grads do *not* need to be discussing $25/oz wines. i'm sure it's fun to pretend to be able to appreciate this level of sophistication, but it's important to remember never to veer too far out of your element.

md(now i finally understand why 2 buck chuck is so popular... hms '98, sls '02 )jd

My wife and I found a '97 chianti in our basement this weekend and drank it last night -- very nice. I have no earthly idea what we paid for it when we got it -- probably closer to two buck Chuck than Opus 1 or whatever NFH was waxing about -- but the time downstairs didn't hurt. Who would have thought I'd have the self-control to let a bottle sit in my house for seven years before opening it? Not me.

Napa/Sonoma Recommendations?

I've consistently had a really good experience at the Robert Sinskey winery on Silverado. Good wines in several varieties. A tasting room tsar who, every time I've been there, has opened a bottle of something she was "not supposed to" because it was really good and she liked to see visitors try it (invariably leading me to buy a couple of bottles, sucker that I am). A couple of times, I've gotten there as they were doing a food-pairing -- Sinskey's wife is a well-known chef, but I'm blanking on the name/restaurant -- and I've seen how really good pairing can have an amazing result.

Joseph Phelps on Silverado is one of the great wineries in NAPA, IMHO, but they don't do regular tastings. If you have a group they might set something up. I went there randomly and got lucky -- they let us join with a group whose scheduling had been screwed up so they were trying to make everyone happy.

Rombauer further north has superb Chardonnays -- not real oaky like other Napa Chardonnays, much smoother. They also have a great Zin and a few other good things. Very nice folks, and if you are nice to the tasting crew they'll give you a tour of the caves.
Concur on Rombauer. More of a buttery flavor to the chard. at least the one I had. My local wine guy says its his top selling chardonnay. at 27 bucks, that seems like a lot for a bestseller (which would imply daily drinker) but hey, life is too cheap to drink cheap wine.
