I agree, I am just not sure either one of them makes sense, which was my criteria. Sebbestianne makes my entertaining list.

SS is mostly a hack. In a good way. Like Gore to the Democrat party.

No. Legitimacy has to do with acceptance, not consent. Medieval monarchs were legitimate, even though they were not elected.

Why is it that everyone on NPR has to use a forced, contrived, shrinking violet tone and affectation? I like NPR, but I want to slap almost all of the commentators/hosts. I don't want them to use shrill Hannity or Limbaughesque voices, but why can't they just talk normally? On the ride in this morning, I switched between Howard, some local radio and NPR. Howard talks normally, and the local talk radio people talk normally. Why does everyone on NPR talk like such wimpering fucking simps? I don't understand it. Does everyone on NPR talk that way, or just the morning and late night crews which I tend to hear?

This may be exactly what you mean, but I've always like Carl Kassel's voice. Very old school. Very reassuring in reading he news. His voice is popular enough that one of the weekend NPR gameshows gives away him leaving messages on people's answering machines as a prize.

At the same time, NPR kicked Bob Edwards to the curb in a most unceremonious way and replaced his distinctive and mellifluous voice with non-descript yet smarmy voices which cause Sebby (and me) to complain.

ETA: Jeez Louise, I never post over here and I've now killed the board.

2. And I have a thing for Corey Flintoff. And Sylvia Poggioli. And Rob Gifford. And as far as I'm concerned Anne Garrolds can do no wrong.

The tone of voice/affectation that you reference is known as the faux-intellectually effette ivory tower elitist tone. It is the kool-aide tone of the most rarified of the liberal media elistists (and those too ugly to appear on CNN on a regular basis).

When they try to affect a tone that appeals to the patriotic heartland an odd psycho-physical reaction occurs. See below the examples of the same:

Actually, I'm just not that interested in politics.

No, I don't think so. The effete faux-intellectual thing is an attempt to sound like Gore Vidal. I kinda like that pompous tone; its amusing to see anyone who thinks so much of himself that he'll try it (and he if he fails at it, its great humor).

The tone I’m annoyed with is that asexual, soft-toned whisper the hosts use. Its like they’re afraid to use any volume because that might offend a segment of audience with overly-sensitive ears. The women who do this sound like they’re talking to babies. The man who do it sound like nasally dweebs. But worse than the auditory waste they piss all over the airwaves is the fact that its all contrived.* These people don’t talk like a bunch of Casper Milquetoasts in real life. They’re just doing it because it’s the way they think their audience wants them to sound - utterly unoffensive and void of every human emotion. They seem to think any spirited rhetoric is a sign of aggression... and Go Help Us, but we cannot seem aggressive. They categorize that as “male patriarchal power speaking,” or some other shit term some professor taught them.

Talking like a scared shitless eunuch doesn’t make you an intellectual or open minded. All it does is put the listener to sleep.

But then, they probably don't want people like me listening anyway.

* Not the substance, just the sound of it.

1. They are talking to babies, figuratively. Their audience is largely made up of intellectually immature infantlike adults who seek to avoid personal responsibility and also seek acceptance and support from the Nanny State.

2. The men are dweebs, nasally or otherwise, like many in the demo party.
