From Carmel down past Hearst there's not much in the way of facilities, or anything else for that matter.

Also, back from Napa. Had a good time and got to probably 10-12 wineries. Sent a couple cases worth of various things we tried home. Stayed at a great B&B. Sad to say V. Rattui was still drawing a crowd as far as I could tell from the Dean & DeLuca across the highway.
So if I were leaving, say, today, because the event I have been waiting for for fucking forever finally took place and I am celebrating and also just want to get the fuck out of Dodge, it appears I could drive up to wherever Hearst Castle is (yes, I will get a map). If we can take it as a given that I like big old houses (e.g., loved Biltmore and all those Rhode Island houses), would I want to spend most of a day (tomorrow) at HC? There appear to be several different tours, each of which is about an hour and a half.

I have not done the castle, so maybe someone who has can chime in, but if you're going right by it, you could stop in San Luis Obispo - it's kind of a cute little town. Or hit the wineries in Los Olivos - it's also a cute little town.

Never been to Hearst Castle, but I understand that you could probably happily spend a long time there.

Incidently, I've always wanted to stay at the Madonna Inn. I can't decide which room I want, though.

HC has (I think) four different tours. Most people pick the tour of the main house, but you can do more than one in a day. The point of the place is not only big old house, but the fact that W.R. Hearst pillaged Europe of many of its great art and architectural treasures when it was in chaos. So it's kind of like a cheesy "Greatest Hits" compilation that you're not proud to own but you're not afraid to slip into the CD player when no one else is listening.

Assuming this gets to you in time.

ETA: Five tours, but one is a Night Tour.

I've watched Citizen Kane about 20 times. Does this count?

Rawk 'n roll

Hey SF-ers:

Go see Jackpot at cafe du nord on Saturday. You won't regret it. Unless Rusty gets too drunk. Or doesn't get drunk enough. But it's worth the risk. When they're on, these guys are as good as it gets.

7 Seconds frontman Kevin Seconds is also on the bill, presumably doing his singer-songwriter schtick (which I also like).

Really. Go. And report back.

I did not like that movie. Never understood why it was supposed to be so great. I thought it was overacted (or just badly acted), the music was overdramatic (like being at a Wagner concert), and completely unrealistic dialogue and situations.

I happily spent a long time there. All in all a great vacation, though I did not like the Monterey peninsula as much as I would have thought I would be. Perhaps it would have helped if when doing the Pebble Beach thing, I had actually SEEN a marine mammal rather than just heard some grunting behind a rock.

Took Atticus's very very good advice on driving. Stayed in Cambria the first night, San Simeon (at an ick place -- everything was full, the hazard of an unplanned trip) the second night, and Pacific Grove the third night. I liked where I stayed very much, but the whole place and Pebble Beach were too cutesy/snobby. Is the whole place just a big tourist attraction?

Anyway. Definitely want to do more exploring up to the north of here. And for a sexless vacation, it ranked in the top 3.

No One Cares

The top 13 (odd number but whatever) spas in the SF area. Missing is the new spa at the W which has received rave local reviews.

1. Kamala spa

2. Spa Nordstrom

3. Splash at the Sports Club/LA

4. Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco

5. Nob Hill Spa at the Huntington Hotel

6. International Orange

7. Relax Now Day Spa

8. Jurlique Wellness Day Spa

9. Re:Fresh, A Day Spa

10. Kabuki Springs & Spa

11. Spa Vitale at the Hotel Vitale

12. Stellar Spa

13. Claremont Resort & Spa
I have only been to the Nordstrom spa. Have heard rave reviews of the W hotel spa and the Re:fresh spa. Any other recommendations are welcome.

That was Less, and he says "fuck you" for not stopping to say hello.

The dalmatian also wishes you had interrupted, but for somewhat different reasons.

Am I the only one who's just a little turned on by the photo the Recorder is using to promote its roundtable on sexual harassment? And does this make me a bad man?
