I didn't mean to suggest the lady wasn't hot. It's just that there is internet hot and then there is hot IRL. Given how hot she is here, she couldn't possibly live up to that IRL (could she?)

Maybe having met Notme for a drink has skewed your view of meeting other female posters? Just a thought.

I wish it had only been a drink . . .
Seriously, think of it this way. You're what, 6'6'' on the internet right?. When you show up to meet a female poster and she sees you are only 6'0, don't you think her fantacy is ruined?

Chill. The only female poster who hasn't puffed her own appearance is Fringey*, and her I know how to make happy.
*irl Fringe is one of the best looking of the female posters. her whole act here adds to her attractiveness.

If you got East Coasters coming to town, you don't impress them with a huevos rancheros joint. You impress them with a dank joint filled with your kindest buds. You know, like Belden Place.

They are definitely not Belden Place people. One of them met Slave on the "night" and has been laughing about it since. Well, on the rare occassion i try to explain my online life to him. Which is prefaced by "remember that guido-ey guy with the " oh nevef mind.
THey requested Slanted Door, a good huevos place in the Mission and I am gonna toss in a brunch at Greens bc one is a veggie. And they have great brunch with a lovely scene.

PCH
Is a road trip up (and I guess back down . . .) the PCH fun -- solo? Or would I have to be focusing on driving too much to be able to appreciate the scenery? How long would it take LA to, um, wherever one would go?

It will be scenic even if you're driving. If you like driving, there is no better road in America. However, there is a limit to tolerance. Many people have undertaken to drive the coast road the entire length of the state because it sounded cool; these people were made mad. The best stretch (IMHO) is between San Simeon and Carmel, because of the vistas and all of the WPA-era bridges. (I love the drive up the Sonoma Coast to Fort Ross, Sea Ranch and Mendocino also, but you're in LA. Big Sur is ambitious for a weekend drive round-trip, but doable. Anything north of SF is not.)
The trick is not to be too religious about always staying on 1 (i.e., the westernmost route). Take 101 to San Luis Obispo, then take the cutoff to 1 at Morro Bay. From there, you're on 1 all the way to Carmel. Good towns to stay in on Friday night include Santa Barbara (great college town; makes you wish you'd gone there instead of some shitty Ivy), Solvang (bizarre but quaint Danish town in a beautiful valley), and Cambria-by-the-Sea. Stop in San Simeon for Hearst Castle, because you're there and it will be a while before you have reason to go back. It's really like somebody chopped Europe into little pieces and reassembled it, willy-nilly, at a beach.
How far you can get totally depends on when you leave LA, and from where. Many LA folks jet up to SB pretty easily on a Friday afternoon; I think if you have patience you can get all the way to Cambria in about four and half hours. You will be unable to get to any other place worth staying that night. Drive to Carmel the next day and spend Saturday night there and in Monterey. Your return trip on Sunday can be entirely on 101 and you'll get home in about six and half. It's an easy drive, a bit slower than 5 with a lot more CHP, so don't push it.
If the point of the trip is to drive the scenic route, you can turn around at Monterey with no regrets. Highway 1 between Monterey and Santa Cruz is a hell-hole. Highway 1 between Santa Cruz and SF has its charms, but after seeing Big Sur your senses will be dulled and you'll be spoiled for it. If the point is to get to SF from LA, don't take PCH. If it were possible to do this, they never would have built I-5 (or what you call "the 5").
My advice for driving through Big Sur here still stands. The midcoast does not have a lot in the way of roadside amenities.

We did SF-LA several years ago. Driving is often scary "eyes on road" only, but she could stop alot. Stayed overnight in Pismo Beach and Santa Cruz, ugly but novel ugly for a michigna boy (or aTexas girl?)
My memory is that the best parts were around Hearst up to Big Sur. Fringe, if you're doing it as a mini-vacation maybe fly soemwhere to start? otherwise, I think the first several hours will be pretty boring for you.
Atticus, I know you avoid pop culture but Solvang is probably a bit overcrowded lately.

I did this a couple of years ago as well. While some places are admittedly more stunning than others, it's all good, so taking a strategy of driving on 1 for a bit and then popping out to 101 when you need to get going somewhere works.
I recommend a car that handles well (fast isn't really necessary - this road was built for Miatas). It's much more fun to drive 1 in a (for example) Porsche than a Suburban. I found the standard-issue-rental Mustang convertable to be somewhat tedious after a while, just because I felt like I was fighting it more than necessary. Perhaps I shouldn't have been trying to keep up with the Porsche.

Did this drive myself a few years ago as well. Left Monterrey in the a.m. with a full tank of gas and drove down to Hearst and overnighted in SLO. If you want to really sightsee on the way, be in the passenger seat as it does get a bit hairy at times. Would not recommend that road at night or in bad weather. From Carmel down past Hearst there's not much in the way of facilities, or anything else for that matter.
Also, back from Napa. Had a good time and got to probably 10-12 wineries. Sent a couple cases worth of various things we tried home. Stayed at a great B&B. Sad to say V. Rattui was still drawing a crowd as far as I could tell from the Dean & DeLuca across the highway.
