Anyone home?

So if a law firm fell in Boston, would anyone hear about it here?

Good point, G3. Maybe you and I should just chat about it.

Anne, Anne Elk, you still out there? Anybody?

Tell you what, just to get something started, let's do a poll (FB style).

Who thinks Testa will survive through the end of the year?

And if you do think Testa will make it, do you have any other nominees for going bust, merging or otherwise disappearing?

Testa. Isn't that Beantown's WSGR?

I remember sending them an unsolicited resume back in 1997, to which they promptly responded with a rejection letter. Their loss.

p(If they had hired me, I would probably still be living in Boston and would be in a better position to answer Who thinks Testa will survive through the end of the year? and to substantively contribute to this board such that you won't have to talk to yourself. )

Correct on both counts.

I go on vacation and people actually post on this board? Whassup?

We'll see if the Testa rumor is still making the rounds around the office tomorrow.

Any news on the incoming classes? Anyone cut salaries or reneged on offers yet?

For all of you doing PAIR cases, this tiebit might be of interest:

Judge placed on leave after remarks to immigrant
By Denise Lavoie, Associated Press, 8/4/2003 17:15
BOSTON (AP) An immigration judge was placed on administrative leave Monday after complaints that he made jokes about Tarzan to a woman who had been raped and tortured in her native Uganda.

The woman, whose first name is Jane, went before Judge Thomas Ragno in June, seeking political asylum in the United States, saying government soldiers killed her husband and attacked her.

''Jane, come here. Me Tarzan!'' Ragno said, according to the woman's doctor, who attended the June 20 deportation hearing to testify as an expert witness about the woman's claims.

''It was disrespectful and insulting, and in my mind it was racist to have a white judge making Tarzan comments to a black woman,'' said Dr. Sondra Crosby.

When I worked on PAIR cases we dreaded this guy.

Not to justify, but in the Tarzan story, wasn't Jane an accultured white woman and Tarzan a stupid, white jungle guy?

The analogy doesn't quite work, other than her name is Jane and she's originally african.

Correct, it doesn't work. I haven't read it or seen any of the recent movies, but wasn't he Lord Greystoke, the missing heir to some English manor? Or am I confusing movie titles?

Regardless, Ragno had quite the reputation.

Perhaps in the good doctor's mind (or the reporter's) it is "racist" for a white judge to attempt any sort of humor in the presence of a black woman.

I agree that the story portrays an inappropriate judicial temperament, but it doesn't lay much foundation for a claim of racism. I also found it somewhat disturbing that the article opened with a statement that appeared to be citing the allegations in the (unsuccessful) petition for asylum as facts.

Sad story; bad reporting.

oh PLEASE! CT, you are usually more thoughtful than this. Are you suggesting that it is some sort of rampant political correctness that makes this judge's comments appear offensive? It doesn't matter if Jane of the story was white- what matters is (i) that the judge was making light of what was, by all accounts, a tragic and traumatic experience; and (ii) making light of it in such a way that suggests brutality among certain dark-skinned types is simply par for the course.

In any event, my first reaction is that it is crude and irresponsible for a judge to attempt humor in that situation, whether the litigant is white, black, or purple.

I tell you what, if I was a judge and a purple person came before me, irrespective of em's prayer for relief, I would be lambasting the sucker. Sitting on high in my robes, I can imagine my rapier wit seething like acid through my razor lips:

"What's eating you, Gilbert Grape?"
"As a partially negligent tort victim, would you say your one eye and one horn prevented you from warning the flying defendant, Mr. Purple People Eater?"
"And does Prince know you're wearing his clothes?"
"Frankly, Violet, I don't give a damn!"
"Did you feel crushed?"
"Stop wining, or I'll hold you in contempt, Merlot!"
"JuiceMaster, Juice Faster....Feeeeeel my Flow"

From reliable sources:

1. The new London office is officially open for business; and
2. An ELB partner (very busy) and associate are leaving to start their own firm.

Edited becuase I can't spell.

What does "ELB" stand for?

Who did they get in New London? Is this more of Cummings & Lockwood's disintegration?

I know, Questions, Questions, Questions.
