first year career advice

How would you suggest that I go about getting my foot

First, I would try to figure out whether you want to do transactional or litigation. There's a lot of antitrust litigation in San Francisco -- there's a rich history of it, and a very healthy plaintiff's bar, which is no coincidence -- but not as much transactional work, especially lately. Your odds of making a switch are much better if you pick litigation, but (IMHO) you're much better off if you do what you want to do rather than something that seems like a growth area.

As for getting the foot in the door, it's always better if you have a contact at a firm to make sure your resume gets noticed, but you're not so senior that you couldn't just send a cover letter and a resume to a recruiting person.

Another question is whether to use a headhunter. I'm personally skeptical that they add much in your situation, but others may disagree.

Talking first year career advice

Thanks for all the help. One last question - do you
know which firms do the best antitrust work?

dentist

Anyone know a really really good cosmetic dentist in the city?
I mean really really good. Who is the best.
I have issues with my current crowns and want someone really really good.
Any superstar dentists around? Or are they all in LA?

12 days with no chatter and the first post is about cosmetic dentistry? I know everyone's all hot and bothered over the Google IPO, but has the economy picked up that much?

Speaking of which, has anyone else noticed a weird uptick in traffic congestion in and out of SF recently? The past two weeks, it's gotten a bit worse, and I'm thinking it might be a harbinger of economic springtime.

Of course, when there's stop-and-go on 280 in Paly Alto again I'll know it's too late to get back on the NASDAQ bandwagon.

I've noticed a weird uptick in traffic in the City, and it's been a bitch trying to get a cab home from work some nights. I had the same thoughts re the economy.

candidates for DA

The Recorder's on-line site published these interviews with the three main candidates for DA in case you're still trying to decide who to vote for.

I was going to say that recent gridlock was due to service cuts in Golden Gate Transit, but that just happened. So maybe it's because there's more traffic on 101 because of the construction on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge.

I've not been here enough to notice a change.

And for God's sake, vote for Fazio...or at least don't vote for Hallinan.

I've noticed more traffic going to the Peninsula and to the East Bay. And that my play time has been cut short with more work.

Already voted this morning, too. Who is that guy who wrote all of the opposition pieces for the various Propositions? Half the time I thought I was reading stuff from YSB.

Keker

The Chronicle ran a profile of John Keker in the Business section this morning.

Well look at that....she lives! Nice to see you, don't be a stranger...I was afraid that the post that AG made about the crazy SF driver might have explained your sudden disappearance. But I'm glad all is well....
