the real Blame
From August 28th AP:
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In the face of a catastrophic Hurricane Katrina, a mandatory evacuation was ordered Sunday for New Orleans by Mayor Ray Nagin.
Acknowledging that large numbers of people, many of them stranded tourists, would be unable to leave, the city set up 10 places of last resort for people to go, including the Superdome.
The mayor called the order unprecedented and said anyone who could leave the city should. He exempted hotels from the evacuation order because airlines had already cancelled all flights.
Gov. Kathleen Blanco, standing beside the mayor at a news conference, said President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.
Too bad the idiot corrupt Dems in charge of Louisiana and NO
don't adminster their state in a manner to ensure public safety. Which.is. their.job Maybe in follow up to this disaster, the citisens of America's cities will realise how corrupt and ineffective the entrenched liberals in charge of their cities are and put some responsible adults (i.e. Republicans) in charge.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin exploded in frustration
I don't know whose problem it is. I don't know whether it's the governor's problem. I don't know whether it's the president's problem," Nagin said during an interview with a local New Orleans radio station.

Uh, looks like its your fault your corrupt moronic jack-arse!

Before launching into his radio tirade, Nagin explained:
You know, I'm not one of those drug addicts. I am thinking very clearly.

Kool-ade is drug, fool!

When you really care, you put someone like this in charge:
- The federal official in charge of the bungled New Orleans rescue was fired from his last private-sector job overseeing horse shows. And before joining the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a deputy director in 2001, GOP activist Mike Brown had no significant experience that would have qualified him for the position. The Oklahoman got the job through an old college friend who at the time was heading up FEMA....
I look at FEMA and I shake my head,'' said a furious Gov. Mitt Romney yesterday, calling the responsean embarrassment.''... Brown - formerly an estates and family lawyer - this week has has made several shocking public admissions, including interviews where he suggested FEMA was unaware of the misery and desperation of refugees stranded at the New Orleans convention center.
Before joining the Bush administration in 2001, Brown spent 11 years as the commissioner of judges and stewards for the International Arabian Horse Association, a breeders' and horse-show organization based in Colorado. We do disciplinary actions, certification of (show trial) judges. We hold classes to train people to become judges and stewards. And we keep records,'' explained a spokeswoman for the IAHA commissioner's office. This was his full-time job . . . for 11 years,'' she added.
Brown was forced out of the position after a spate of lawsuits over alleged supervision failures. ``He was asked to resign,'' Bill Pennington, president of the IAHA at the time, confirmed last night....

Yes, the politically motivated appointments of unqualified stooges that results in the deaths and oppression of innocents. Reminds me of Janet Reno.
Has she apologized for the murder and mayhem that resulted from her tenure as AG? I am sure Elian is waiting........

Penske:
lots of pretty maps with colors- and 1 serious point- The President had advised getting the city as empty as possible 2 days before Katrina struck. the Mayor left buses empty and then flooded.
Penske's score- looks like the City fucked up. Point delivered with side order of insanity, but delivered.
Ty:
Boston hate diatribe listing the qualifications of a man, yet proven to have done no wrong, to make the point that the man the Boston paper wishes to defame as being at fault, lacks qualifications to do some job that the paper doesn't define.
Ty's score:
0
What did the guy fail to do? What could a more"qualified" man have done? It sems to me you and your hate rag have just pinned a huge bunch of suffering on a man's doorstep w/o saying why it goes to him.
I mean, what if his last job was Amway door-to-door salesman? Does that mean he screwed up? what are the Mayor's prior qualfications to run a big city?
Interviews I've seen have said once the city was flooded, and (remember this part ty?) still largely occupied, things were fucked.
I saw a really qualified man explain that since so many people were trapped in their homes, the first response needed to be having boats circulate to pick up people. But the problem was all boats near the city were ruined , and there was no local port to get them in. So boats had to be dropped several hours away.
Again the boats being needed as an initial step, was because the city was left occupied.
So Penske wins this one on colorful presentation, as usual, but also gets a rare win over Ty on substance. Ty. best to keep to your blog evidence to theroies that can't be so easily destroyed.

Assumption of risk.
And, btw, the building codes are paid for by the builders, not the federal government.
A propos of, well, this:
NYT Op-Ed
What disaster preparedness did NO and La. engage in? Can't they be expected to have done at least something? They quickly pointed the finger at Bush before the spotlight fell on them. But it seems that local and regional preparedness should also be in place. What else are states for--issuing license plates?

The Boston Herald is a right-wing rag owned by Rupert Murdoch. When it's piling on, you know something is going on.
eta: Oh, and President Bush already admitted that the response was "inadequate," as Penkse pointed out yesterday, so quit fighting the rearguard action.

censorship in our time
Kanye West went off on Bush last night, but those of us on the West Coast missed it because NBC censored his remarks. Are all you right-wingers going to get up in arms about the political correctness here? Since you're all sure that the backlash against this sort of carping is going to help the GOP in the next election, I'm sure you're pretty miffed that NBC wouldn't let us hear him.

Of course. I know that Hank likes to read the various things that get mentioned in posts here, so I was just helping him go back and find it.

Hurrican BS
I can't fucking believe that everyone's reaction to this tragic disaster is to cast blame, and it's not just on these boards. Everywhere I go people are arguing about who is to blame. It's fucking sickening how politicized and pathetic this nation has become, when our first reaction to the worst natural disaster in US history is to argue about who's fault it was.
That's all. Carry on.

Two comments:
1. It's sad that someone who is talented and a role model of someone who perservered to find success (notwithstanding the racism that acknowledgely exists in America) couldn't use the occassion and the forum to try to bridge the gap that exists and inspire people black, white, rich or poor to help their neighbour. The fact that racism exists (although I should note I don't think Bush is a racist) shouldn't be a rationale to perpetuate the divide. Really sad.
2. NBC's cya is nice, but the cynic in me says, someone's business manager and record company made some frantically pleading calls prior to NBC redacting the west coast feed. Especially since someone has a new album now.
3. I'll still buy his album He got a dope beat that I can shake my bootie to!!! Word!
