Summer of love
Let's say you may have a solution for your commuting issues, what neighborhoods in SF are good to live in? Assume that you don't know much about the city, but would prefer to live an urban neighborhood with some action but not too much. If it helps, think Kalorama or Dupont or (better yet) Logan Circle instead of Adams Morgan (a touch too lively) or Capital Hill (a touch too quiet).

Take a look at this and figure out which suits you:

Screw SF. That mofo's a sinking ship. The killer housing deals are in the East Bay, a magical place with fairy-tale place names straight out of Tolkien. Pleasant-town! Pleasant-Hill! Dublin! Black-Hawk! Walnut Creek! (Think of it -- a creek! Made of walnuts!) Now up to 60% off! Shop early, and avoid panic buying!

This page (from the possibly-soon-defunct Chron's site) might be helpful, too, as it tries to be more descriptive about the different neighborhoods. If you're going to be commuting south to the Peninsula or SV by car (or even by Google shuttle), you will probably prefer to be on the south side of town -- Noe Valley, Potrero, the lower Haight, the Inner Sunset, etc.

Who knew that I lived next to a neighborhood called Deco Ghetto? I certainly didn't.

Re: Discussion of Firms and Life in SF/SV
"Deco Ghetto" is ridiculous. You live next to the Jewelry Mart Ghetto, as far as I'm concerned. But the rest of the Chron's pap seems like it should be somewhat helpful for someone who doesn't know the neighborhoods at all and is coming -- horror of horrors -- from DC.

The Excelsior, which isn't listed in that article. It is (was) in the southwest of the city, largely white, Irish-Catholic.

What are the odds Adder gets a funny haircut/style within 6 months of arrival? Some transplants put up a better fight than others.

It's not the same. Within days of getting here, your hair either falls out or turns into an 'N Sync-type coif.

I'm not sure what that means, but if it involves spending more than a few minutes on daily hair preparation, or anything involving coloring, I wouldn't hold your breath.
