Look at the Illinois Senate race. GOP ran Alan Keyes against Obama.

Keyes wasn't just a bad candidate, he was crazy. Batshit crazy. IIRC, the Illinois GOP establishment was almost openly embarrassed to run the guy, it was so bad. And even Keyes got something like 25-30% of the vote.













Edited to add, actually that's probably an imperfect analogy at best. Better is the previous polling mentioned in WaPo: "A few months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found Bush's approval rating among blacks at 51 percent. As recently as six months ago, it was at 19 percent."
