Of what benefit is it to hide the existence of interrogation prisons other than to avoid international scrutiny? This isn't covert ops, which are, understandably, covert. Once you've caught them and are interrogating them all but the information gleaned can be public without serious threat to intelligence gathering efforts.
But maybe what you're saying is that torture is justified in these circumstances.

Sure, as would I. But I take a somewhat longer view that the lex talionis perhaps is quite costly in the long run. As much as I'd like to kill anyone who raped my wife immediately, I recognize that as a civilization of civilized people we actually are better off by committing that responsibility to the state.

Not having engaged in the commercial opportunities that Craigslist offers, my guess is that for a "nsa afternoon delite asap" the contents of those pictures are more relevant than "favourite colour" and "hobbies/interests".

Some things, yes, but I think not this thing.
I called this on the Board over a year ago, and am glad this is getting more publicity now. [The revelation that we ("the OGA") hid some prisoners at Abu Ghraib from the ICRC was a huge clue.] I'm also very glad that this stuff makes some members of the Agency (and many members of the FBI and the military) upset and uncomfortable.
In order to ultimately preserve the freedoms we cherish -- and to avoid the sort of dictatorship that Penske babbles about -- we must have our ideals (democratic and human rights, etc.) instilled in those who serve in our nation's military and security organs. After all, it is ultimately that self-restraint, and the acceptance of civilian oversight and control, among those agencies which prevent such a dictatorship.
This is not what my family members and I served and/or fought for. If it continues unchecked, the day will come when I no longer recognize my country.
