Yeah. That's it. Roseville. Rose Hill, Ruby Hill. It's all starting to sound the same to me. At least I got the Rose right.
And aren't all new neighborhoods gated (or semi-gated) communities now?

What happens when you put two big, undistinguished law firms together?

Any idea whether this is accretive or whether it's simply a revenue play?

I have family in the Auburn/Grass Valley area. One of them works in Sacramento. I don't know what kind of commute you're used to, but if you can put up with an hour on I-80 you can buy in the Gold Country and have LOTS OF FREAKIN' LAND. As in, forget you have neighbors kind of land. As in, ride the horses out to mend the fences kind of land. There are not a lot of places in California where that's true. And it's about an hour and half to Tahoe, and none of the road between you and there is in Emeryville or Pinole. That's a life I can recommend, but I don't know whether it's compatible with working in a law firm.

As for the town of Sacramento, not much to say other than that it's one of the state capitals that wouldn't exist if it weren't the state capital, if you catch my drift. Of course, the same thing was true of D.C. --- or is true of D.C.

If you are coming from the Bay Area, San Diego, or even L.A., consider that the weather in Sacramento sucks. It's hot and somewhat humid (not Midwest or Deep South humid, but more humid than the Coast) during the summer and its got a bad allergy index during the spring. They don't roll up the streets downtown at sunset, but I think they do it at 8pm. On the plus side, business is moving that direction, so there does seem to be work that is not just government and agriculture. I think it is an attractive place to live if you don't mind the heat, like to spend time doing outdoor activities (like camping, fishing, skiing) instead of nightlife (clubs, theater, culture generally), value the size of your home over its location, and want good schools (this only applies if you're living in the rich suburbs of the Foothills or in Davis.)

(My apologies if I should have created a new thread for this post.)

I'm looking for project attorney work in the Bay area from August until I get my bar results in November (I'm moving from the East coast and trying to cover all the bases should I not find permanent employment before I move). Who are the major legal employment agencies that your firms use (I'm assuming that most large firms out your way are using K attys for doc review)? Do any of your firms contract directly with project attorneys to cut out the middleman?

Thanks much from a one-time greedy associate who's now just trying to get by.

Strike

Is the hotel strike back on? Or is this just another random protest? From the whistles and the chanting, it sounds like 2 months ago.

What, that they suck?

If you're going to post something like this, you need to wait until the secret's revelation is imminent. I've been on pins and needles the whole weekend, and now I'm just pissed.

I'm sorry. How inconsiderate of me. Anyway, the rumor was more interesting than the reality--I had heard of mass defections from VLG/Heller to Orrick, and it's not a mass defection. At least not yet. But it's pretty close--9 partners and at least 2 associates have left in the past 6 weeks, maybe more will follow.

But you're right, not that interesting I guess.

No need to apologize, I was just hoping it was something like all SF/SV firms were going to start wearing barrister's wigs or were moving to a socialism model and eliminating the distinction between partners and associates. Its just more VLG departures. Sigh; I was hoping for a wig.

I'm late on this, but didn't VLG and Orrick have a referral agreement several years back?

Yes. There was some surprise when VLG merged with Heller instead of Orrick.
