Trump couldn’t pull off a coup. There was 0.000 chance of that. Grievance Nation, OTOH, is about to paint the country red this fall. They, and particularly if they get DeSantis in office in 2024, can usher in quiet, incremental authoritarianism.

Trump’s like an evil, dumb Moses. He could never get to full Mussolini-ness. And if he’d stayed in charge, he’d fuck it up. But his followers might assist DeSantis in getting there.

When you get yourself into a logic hole, your instinct is to dig even more furiously. A 0.000 chance! Wow, that’s low. Those are the same odds you gave of Roe being overturned. But I get it. Even when you’re always wrong, you’re always right.

Someone with your track record should be very careful about typing those words. You only think you're correct because of your incorrect stereotype of who the Trump backers are.

They are not the economically downtrodden. They are just white people.

This month, the Supreme Court has

1) made abortion illegal
2) made school prayer legal
3) made a 100 year old gun control law invalid
4) overturned Miranda rights
5) made it illegal for the EPA to regulate emissions
6) limited Native American sovereignty

More for the whole year here.
And somehow expanding the Court is the radical idea???

This from someone who thought China's Covid policy was a good idea?

They are not just white racists. If you think its primarily racism, or are unable to grasp how those who are economically screwed gravitate to racism among a basket of other grievances, you're clueless.

And Grievance Nation is no longer Trumper backers alone, nor is its impact limited to that crowd. It's making inroads all over the place. I'm seeing moderates flip red. I can't vote red this fall because the candidates offered to me are simply unacceptable. Like, really fucking unacceptable. But a lot of independents like me are doing so.

Of course it's mostly economic. People think, wrongly, that changing Congress and possibly the Senate will change gas prices and lower inflation. They're too dumb to realize that high gas prices and inflation tend to cure themselves. You just have to wait a bit.

But it's also cultural. Moderates are sick of people who think like you do. The view that racism is the primary reason for everything is offensive for a number of reasons. To me it's offensive because it's stupid, reductionist, and a narrative fancied by credulous virtue junkies. It's more embarrassing than anything else. But a lot of people of otherwise moderate bent, swing voters, have had some pretty choice words for me when I assert that our justice system is racist, which is true. The inroads made on that front with conservatives, before progressives like you started occupying center stage in these policy debates over the past two years, are now destroyed. I suspect these people hear views like yours and think, "Fuck these progressives." And so the baby gets thrown out with the bathwater. If I say I support Larry Krasner, I don't just take a faceful of shit from law and order troglodytes. Now I take it from the middle. From moderate Democrats as well.

You are not even liked by your own party. Moderate Democrats recognize that doctrinaire, mindless progressives are alienating exactly the voters they need this fall. Joe Biden would be 10 points up if he'd told the progressive wing of his party to fuck itself publicly.

You can tell yourself this is because of the right wing media painting progressives poorly. And some of that may be true. In that regard, you're a useful idiot. But more generally, the things ardent progressives say sound naive, utopian, strident, and silly. People roll their eyes. They're sick of it.

There aren't enough of you to matter this fall, and I think a lot of the middle will stay home. Good luck this November countering the pissed off moderates who do show up and vote what they think is their pocketbooks and the army of right wingers that seems to be expanding.

Conservatives like to pretend that the Warren Court was some sort of liberal conspiracy, but Warren was a Republican, and the Warren Court's rulings generally followed a consensus across much of the country about how things should work. No one packed the Court to produce its rulings. The Roberts Court is going to be far more activist than the Warren Court was, far less legitimate, and much less popular. Which is ironic, because that's not how Roberts would like to do it, but on most cases he won't be the deciding vote.

Some times you say the Rs will kill the D’s in November but other times you say if Roe is overturned then the D’s will win big.

Can you pick one so we proceed well advised?

If this were normal conditions (2019), I would say that the Democrats would succeed this fall by mobilizing voters pissed off about what the Supreme Court did. But it is not normal times. Inflation, and more specifically gas prices, is the most significant issue on voters’ minds. Additionally, people like Adder have been saying crazy things for the last two years, they have turned off a shit ton of moderates.

I think the Republicans are going to lose a lot of votes they otherwise would have received because of what the Supreme Court did. I just don’t think it’s going to be nearly adequate to offset the votes against Democrats and for Republicans.

https://clerk.macombgov.org/sites/de...ber16/105.html

This is 2008 and 2016 election results in Macomb County. The % for Trump flipped 10% compared to McCain. The 2008 numbers held in 2012 and the 2016 in 2020.

It's where I grew up. I remember after college a friend got a chance to be campaign manager for an R congress candidate. I joined in because of lots of $$$ to spend. I remember working a poll on election day. A huge % of the voters came in holding a piece of paper where the UAW told them they need to vote D. Our whole campaign was pointless. But anyhoo, it is VERY working class.

And the problem with those articles (beyond exit polls- who would say what they actually make?) is the comparison to "average." The really really poor around here vote D in amazing %s. And those people take down the "average."

But those aren't who Sebby is talking about. Sebby is talking about people who have a bit to lose, and are seeing it erode away. I am sure some wealthy people vote Trump, but the vast majority of who I see around here sporting Trump 2024 flags or Don't tread on Me flags, or, just recently flying Fuck Biden flags (in Northern Mi a month ago to pick up my new puppy I saw all 3 flags flying in the same pick up truck bed!) are not wealthy people.

When they use household income, also consider a lot of younger voters in and around cities vote D. Their household is 1. $72k for 1 is different than $72k for a family of 4.

And the big one: can a state legislator assign the electors they want without regard to voting?

You asked a question, I was curious, did a quick Google search and sent you some results. Your anecdotes don’t really persuade me the articles are not accurate, but I also don’t really care. Just trying to be helpful. Because I am a good Lawtalkers citizen.

Same same.

Although election results are anecdotes in Minnesota? That was Trump’s claim about election results IIRC?
